Bone density doesn’t seem like something that most people have to worry about. When you hear the term “bone density”, most people think about having osteoporosis. But the reality is that everyone, both males and females, reach peak bone density at age 30. After that, we are all losing our bone density at about 2-3% percent each year. In fact, females lose it at about 4-6% after menopause.
It’s not until people’s bone loss reaches the point that they have osteoporosis do they take the steps to correct the issue, and at that point, most people think that they can only fix the problem by taking drugs that are prescribed. What Wolff did not discover in 1892 was how much force you have to load through a bone to cause the bone modelling process. In 2012, there was a study conducted in the U.K. and they actually discovered the exact amount of force that must be loaded specifically through the hip in order to cause bone growth in the hip bone. The reason the study focused on the hip bone specifically is because of the high mortality rate for people over the age of 65 who fall and break a hip. Studies have estimated that the mortality rate is nearly 79% within 1-year of the hip fracture.
The study found that a minimum of 4.2 multiples of body weight (MOB) is the minimum dose response for triggering osteogenesis in the hips.
That’s right, if you weigh 200 pounds, you must load 820 pounds through your lower limbs and hip joint to trigger osteogenesis in the hip. Sounds pretty incredible, right? I’ll admit, that is incredible. When I first heard that figure, I thought “well how am I going to do that [safely]?”
